Reading CHM files on OS X

Wednesday 28 December 2005 - Filed under mac

I had to look at some docs that were in Microsoft Help format – ‘.chm’, or ‘Compiled HTML’. It looks like a compressed, possibly indexed web archive format. Luckily, I only had to look for a minute before I found an OS X reader for CHM files that I like – Chmox. It gives you the pages and the index, then basically gets out of your way.

I’ve used them all and have to say Chimp is my favorite and even comes with a Spotlight mdimporter plugin.

I think the link is supposed to be http://chmox.sourceforge.net

ollie: Thanks, it’s fixed in the post now.

For what it’s worth, Chimp does look really good, but I don’t read CHM files often enough to justify even a price as low as $5.

There’s another free one that even provides search functionality and favourites: http://sourceforge.net/projects/chamonix

Damn, have been looking for a Spotlight importer for .chm files, and now the Chimp site seems to be down!

I am trying chimp, the mdimport plugin must be installed manually, and if it hadnt been mentioned here I would never know about it.

Must copy it yourself into /Library/spotlight from the application package.
