Zoomr, Yellow Tree

I’ve taken to carrying my camera around with me, for practice. It’s lead to an unhealthy obsession with camera bags (of which there is no perfect single choice).

It’s also lead to maxing out my Flickr account quickly, and I have no cash for a Pro account. So, I thought I’d try the new - Zoomr 2.0, and see what I like about it. Geotagging and Google maps integration is cool, and I like the trackbacks, but to be honest, the interface could be much cleaner. Lots of loud colors and bold text vie for attention with the photos, which should be the real focus of attention on a photo sharing site. At any rate, here’s the first photo I uploaded to Zoomr, something I took while waiting for the 30 bus at UCSD:

    Nice photo!

I don’t like that Zoomr interface either. To stay within the 20MB Flickr limit I just started uploading photos in 800×600 only. That way they end up being 200KB at most which lets me have plenty of photos up there. And I hardly ever look at larger versions on flickr anyway, so at least from my point of view the smaller size isn’t too much of a disadvantage.

Wow. I take the 30 every day to UCSD. Small world…

ssp: Thanks - I think I’ll probably just throttle my images on Flickr too, but for now I’m over the limit so I’ve got a month to try out Zoomr before I can upload anything to Flickr again. We’ll see how I feel at the end of the month - I do like the easy geotagging.

William: Small world indeed. I’m rarely on the bus these days. I live in PB so the 30 takes over an hour to get up to school.

I’ve been driving, but I’m thinking of biking more often. I’m always thinking of biking more often, but it never seems to happen.

    Regarding geotagging:

    1. For geotagging on flickr: I recently discovered this little bit of script magic which is quite good for geotagging on flickr.

    2. I don’t like the idea of geotagging stuff that’s uploaded already as there seems to be no way to sync the location data back to my real (i.e. local) image files. So I tend to prefer adding the GPS tags locally and then upload them if I want to. (related blog post with a clumsy/broken AppleScript for the task.)
